Well, I didn't get my nice video game night on Tuesday. I did, however, get the full Sonata chapter edit done a day early and got a specific section beta'd, so I'm going to chill out tonight instead.

If possible. We'll see if I manage. I really need it, I'm just so bad at relaxing.

Five more icons for my 100ships table

I have been working on sporadically remembering the [community profile] 100ships table since 2022, and today I felt like making a few more shippy icons.

Here they are:

#14 – Navy #16 – Neon #52 – Salt #72 – Desert #75 – Buff

I realize that Ody3 aren't really in the navy, but I feel like cruise ship / navy, close enough. I really wanted to have an icon of them in their navy blue uniforms, but didn't have a good cap. :/ I made some Spock icons for [community profile] your_favourites today and while I was at it, made two more for the table. And the remaining two are Murderbot and the movie "Good Luck To You, Leo Grande".

The table is here, there are currently 40 icons in it: https://tinny.dreamwidth.org/704185.html

As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner. Even more impenetrable stream of consciousness style than Mrs. Dalloway but eventually I started to grasp what was going on and all the narrators and their unreliability. Like, Cora, your impressions are laughably off base. Darl, you committed arson and your POV chapter doesn't even indicate it except mildly in retrospect. Addie, your only POV chapter is literally after you are dead. Put this book on the Weird But Interesting shelf.

In RL, I continue my organization spree. I can see my craft space again so maybe I will re-start one of the projects I've been stalling on.

The current challenge at [community profile] fandom10in30 is Vibrant Colors. My fave thing, turning up the vibrance and saturation to the max! I made these in like two days, lol. :) I hope I won't hate them tomorrow, but for now I adore the colors. It was a real challenge to make Karadec vibrant. :D

I am intensely craving biscuits, and it is too hot to fire up the oven tonight. :( So now I'm just sitting here, wishing I had biscuits. This is not conducive to getting work done.

(In theory I could order biscuits, but I packed a lunch and I have too many leftovers at home to justify buying takeout for something I can bake perfectly well when it cools down.)

~ July 2 - The Old Guard 2
~ July 11 - Foundation (season 3)
~ July 17 - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (season 3)
~ September 24 - Slow Horses (season 5)

Just gonna drop the Foundation trailer here in my ongoing quest to get more people to watch the show.

I have been meaning to work on these icons for a while now. Since it's SO hot out it's the perfect time to chill and make some icons. :)

I made these icons for Round 71 over @ [community profile] monthlyinspo

The theme was Cinema Paradiso. We were to make icons of inspired of different films. I thought since it's a movie theme why not make some icons of the Narnia movies. I was inspired by a few of the movies in the inspiration post.

Here are some teasers:

Things are happening, and I am exhausted.

US politics...just...whoof. Usually I try to keep a firewall between IRL activism and my journal where I put my fun fandom stuff, so I can have some separation there, but...fuck, you know? I have my list of stuff I can do IRL and I'm doing it, but it really is just So Many Goddamn Things All The Time.

Prowl's having a few worrying medical symptoms again. We might be looking at cancer again, but in a different place. If that's the case...well, as long as she's happy and comfortable, that's the important part and we'll prioritize keeping her that way. For right now she seems to be having a great time tripping me in the bathroom at 2 AM.

But, on the bright side, work is going reasonably well. Slowing down for summer, which is really nice. We're in the path of the upcoming Heatwave From Hell, so I'm bringing the grad students a couple boxes of ice cream sandwiches this week - our AC is functional, but not awesome, and last time we had this kind of weather we had a campus-wide power outage. (This also means ice cream for me, but mostly it's for the grad students.)

It might be a "turn off the internet and play video games" kind of night, really. I haven't done that in a while, and it might be a good time.

I can't remember where I read the phrase "Life isn't about counting the moments, it's about making the moments count!"

It might have been on some bumper sticker or glitter graphic online, or maybe it was one of those quotes that get wrongly attributed to someone like JFK or Plato.

Either way, where I read it, or who said it doesn't matter to me.

The only thing that does, is the message, because it's one I happen to agree with.

Nothing lasts forever, which is equally as comforting as it is unsettling. It's just the way of things.

The end, the last good or bad time, always arrives at some point. Sometimes it announces itself.

Sometimes it creeps in like a thief in the night, but either way, the end will come, this we know.

What we don't know is when.

So, just like that phrase I know I read somewhere, I've always tried to enjoy myself as much as possible when I can, while I can.

Just like I told you when we met.

I truly believed, still do, that you and I could have lasted forever though.

Or however many years in a lifelong relationship count as forever.

If only we met before you had the kids that you later prioritized over your own happiness, which just made me care about you even more.

If only.

Two memories of you, of us, stand out as examples of that phrase.

____________________________________________________________

The first is the night we both said I love you.

We'd only been together two months.

It was the second week of April, chillier than usual after an evening of showers, past midnight when you called me and asked me if I could get out of bed and out of the house without disturbing anybody.

On your way home after a work dinner, you called me.

"I missed you. I want to see that pretty little face and fall asleep with it buried in my neck."

"I can meet you at the top of the hill in ten mintes," I replied.

My favorite place to fall asleep was in your arms.

Five minutes later I walked out into the night, wind blowing through my hair, fire coursing through my veins.

Spring was supposed to be here, but the night was colder than I anticipated and felt closer to the one in February when we met, with the vicious chill in the air and the rain washed streets.

I arrived with minutes to spare at our meeting point, shivering as I waited in front of an old restaurant styled like a Medieval tavern.

I breathed in, enjoying the night and the silence.

There wasn't a sound to be heard, save for the resaurant's sign hanging above me, creaking on its hinges in the wind.

Then your car swung around the corner, a flash of blue against the backdrop of an inky sky, like a shark in the night sea.

I was barely seated when you leaned across and our lips met.

When we finally broke apart for breath you simply repeated "I missed you" before we drove the rest of the way in silence, my head on your shoulder.

A couple of hours later, lying together with your fingers running through my long blonde hair as they always did before falling asleep - your version of a lullaby that always cradled me into a contented slumber - you asked me if I was in love with you.

I was terrified.

Terrified that you weren't yet.

That maybe it was too soon for me to tell you the truth, that yes, I really was already in love.

But I did it anyway.

Your expression when I said that, and your own confession about already knowing I was the love of your life is something I replay in my mind on anniversaries even now.

Including the anniversary of your death.

The sweetness of that moment can never be soured.

To this day, the month of April and its showers still have a special place in my heart.

____________________________________________________________

"Life's too short to drink the bad quality stuff just because it's cheap," you said with a laugh tossing back the brand name vodka and pineapple before kissing me.

You were right, it did taste better than the off brand stuff.

But maybe that was just because I tasted it from your lips.

I'll never forget that day.

A still, heavy summer afternoon. Warm golden rays from the sun spilling over our naked, tangled limbs as we lay on the clean sheets. A dreamy, golden haze of day drinking and syrupy slow and sensual sex that made my spine arch and melt like a candle.

"It will be like this every day soon," you whispered in my ear as you lay pressed against my back, one hand stroking my neck.

We had plans.

Plans to move in together officially, and spend every day that was left of that summer, in the same delicious way we'd spent that Saturday.

We had no idea of the storm that awaited us, just round the corner.

It barelled in like a tornado, tearing down the happiness we'd built in the past year and leaving only debris and broken hearts in its wake.

You made the decision that benefitted your kids.

I could never blame you for that.

I knew you were hurting as much as I was.

There was nothing we could do but accept the inevitable.

The end had arrived with the end of summer.

To this day, the second week of October still feels like a time for grieving.

non-fiction.

This is about my first love. We wanted forever together but didn't get it, and before we could reconnect again, he died. Our time together nevertheless was beautiful and we truly loved each other so much, it's a great example of the phrase I referenced at the start of this and the "quality over quantity" one.

Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. Slow paced since it's literally just about a day in the life of a woman planning a party but I liked the writing. It flows through a lot of perspectives and shows how differently everyone sees each other and themselves and their shared past and it's not afraid to be kind of confusingly figurative. Would read more Virginia Woolf.

In other news, I have been on a huge organization spree. On the one hand, I am intellectually aware that my sudden encompassing desire to organize my entire living space is probably due to the fact that things are really unstable and weird at work and I want to control things in a sphere of my life that I can control. On the other hand, I have purged so much old junk, particularly paper--my nemesis--and like motivation is motivation. I might clean the garage next. I might wash the windows for the first time since I moved here. The sky's the limit.

No, brain, 800 words of writing today is fine, actually. It is Tuesday and this Sonata chapter only needs about 1200 words added (the rest is all just editing and shouldn't take more than a few hours). We don't actually need to sit here and stress about how The Chapter Will Be Late If We Don't Write More Today, because it won't.

(Fun fact, for anybody following the fic as it posts: the last two chapters were fully rewritten to accommodate for snowballing edits from the first 9 chapters. Hopefully this was not super noticeable! We're now in the "all major edits made, streamlining them back into the plot for the finale" phase, which is much easier.)

Put down my book list for a hot second to finish watching some things.

Ghosts (US) (season 5) - This is such a silly fun show! I know like 1 person that watches it and yet to have been going for five seasons it must have some popularity somewhere.

Doctor Who (season ?? - this 2025 one) - I didn't even know this season was airing until I saw a random news article. Finale was recent so spoilers )

Leverage Redemption (season 3) - My comforting revenge show.

Mission: Impossible - I'm having such an unexpected moment with the Mission: Impossible franchise? I wasn't even going to go see the new movie but then I did and I enjoyed it a lot which reminded me that I enjoyed the other movies so I rewatched them all and they're ridiculously fun. I love Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation best but watching all of them is so interesting because it's like okay the first movie is much more of a spy movie, the second movie is I don't even know, like I would love to know what direction John Woo was giving to Dougray Scott because he was fully insane in it, then we get JJ Abrams MI3, and then Ghost Protocol with the Russian prison escape and the Burj Khalifa, Rogue Nation gives us Ilsa, honestly they're all fun to me. I spent the last like 2 weeks watching these and reading fic and here's a fic rec list if anyone's interested.

Also a couple weeks ago was [community profile] vidukon_cardiff (Bristol)! As always, live-watching and Discord commenting on hundreds of vids with other vid-loving people was great and I've got a whole new docket of shows and movies I'd never heard of to add to my watch list. I didn't make a vid for Premieres this year which was a little sad but someday I will vid again!
